Thanks to one of our favorite hip hop heads for sending us The Cool Kids debut album, When Fish Ride Bicycles. It’s been 3 years since they released anything official, and When Fish Ride Bicycles is chock-full of those laid-back, old-school jams you come to expect from the Chi-town boys.
“Summer Jam” is one of my favorites off the album, with its West-coast G-funk sound, perfect to cool off in the summer heat.
Regardless of the temperature topping 100 for the last month, yesterday was “technically” the first day of summer. To celebrate this insane heat, here’s a summer-y new track from our boys The Cool Kids, featuring soul-man Mayer Hawthorne.
It was only a matter of time before two artists we’ve featured on our mixtapes would collaborate. Now, we don’t want to say we’re solely responsible, but they know where credit is due.
19-year-old Mac Miller hit it big after he dropped the Best Day Ever mixtape on March 11, and his single “Donald Trump,” who’s video garnered over 1 million hits within its first week of release. Then, he was buzzing all over SXSW, playing shows with Wiz Khalifa and The Cool Kids.
He just leaked his latest track, “On And On,” and it’s definitely got that “anthem” sound. Listen and throw yo hands up.
It’s been a while since we heard some new stuff from Chi-town’s The Cool Kids. They’re gearing up for their new album so they’ve decided to share this bumpin’ track. “Bundle Up” might not be appropraite for all of us who are already enjoying the spring weather, but we’ll sure listen in envy when the heat hits triple digits in a few months down here in Texas. Enjoy!
Chicage emcees The Cool Kids are rolling back through Austin tonight, and we’re pumped! They’ve got a great old-school hip hop sound and rock a great live set. (We also have their track “Pump Up The Volume” on our FREE Fall Sampler!)
Supporting sets from Kydd, Napalm, GOBI, Roosh Williams and Lee Coretta. Tickets are $18, show starts at 7, Cool Kids go on at 9:30.
Over the last few years, former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker has really been diving into hip hop. He drummed for Alabama rapper Yelawolf‘s latest album, and his upcoming solo album, Give The Drummer Some, will feature artists like RZA, Ludacris, Lil Wayne, Raekwon, and B.o.B.
Oh, and he did this ridiculous remix of the already ridiculous Soulja Boy “Crank That” song.
“Jump Down” is the first single off Barker’s upcoming album, and it features laid-back beats and rhymes from our favorite indie-rappers, The Cool Kids.
Chicago-based Flosstradamus, consisting of DJs Autobot and J2k (who also happens to be Kid Sister‘s brother), are returning to Austin next week, and if you’ve seen these guys before, you know it isn’t to be missed.
Prepare to bob your heads to Chi-town’s finest MC’s, The Cool Kids, new mixtape! It’s produced by the LA Leakers. Released on Memorial Day, Chuck and Mikey are giving it out FOR FREE, so don’t hesitate to get your hands on it:
Mess With Texas is probably my favorite South By showcase, in that the line-up is full of punk, hardcore and electro bands. And it’s free and open to the public. That means no wristband or no 21+ age limit. Just show up and have your face rocked. MWTX alumni include NOFX, The Black Lips, Kid Sister, Circle Jerks, Les Savy Fav, Cursive, and Lucero.
Despite a 30 minute bus ride from West Campus, followed by a 15-block walk to the MWTX grounds, we made it just in time to catch punk icon Billy Bragg’s set. He ripped through classics like “To Have And Have Not” and “There Is Power In The Union.” Bragg is always awe-inspiring with his political banter and aggressive songs, considering his act consists himself and an electric guitar.
As miserable as the weather was on Saturday, it didn’t seem to bother anyone watching Fucked Up tear up the North Stage at MWTX. As usual, singer Damian Abraham (aka Pink Eyes) was shirtless and pants less, even taunting the cold by pouring audience members’ drinks into his underwear. Though I’ve seen Fucked Up before, I still can’t get used to seeing Pink Eyes naked. And I’d like to let you feel my pain, enjoy!
Pink Eyes also wowed the crowd by sticking plastic cups to his head, and climbing a ladder… I guess to show off his junk.
I am fucking awesome!!!!
Fucked Up, as always, is fun as hell to see live. They even closed with a cover of The Ramone’s “Blitzkrieg Bop”.
After Fucked Up, we waited for Andrew W.K. to take the stage. Actually, we waited for Andrew W.K. to party onto the stage, party our faces off, and party Austin into Armageddon. Needless to say, he did exactly that.
From the moment Andrew W.K. ran out on stage, the crowd was going completely ape shit. He played with a full band, complete with three guitarists and a back up dancer (who happens to be his wife, celeb fitness instructor Cherie Lily). They partied through classic tracks like “We Want Fun,” “She Is Beautiful,” and “Party Hard.” We were up in front, and maybe it was everyone jumping around, shouting to every song, or perhaps Andrew W.K. simply pumped a cloud of pure “party” and “fun” into the audience, but it was one of the most fun sets I’ve ever been a part of.
Then it was time for GWAR. Now, if you aren’t familiar with GWAR’s infamous live performances, you have obviously been living under a rock. GWAR wear sci-fi/horror inspired costumes and sacrifice pop culture celebrities on stage, spraying blood and bile into the audience. Oh, and they also play metal.
During their set, they managed to dismember Lady Gaga and rip the face off of a resurrected Michael Jackson.
Somehow avoiding the splatter-fest of GWAR, we trekked to the South Stage to catch Neon Indian to close out the night. Fighting against the wind, they sounded great and the dancing helped bring up my body temperature.
